佛山赞生堂是一间誉满全城的医馆，主人梁赞（元彪 饰）不仅咏春拳天下第一，医术更是妙手回春，受到当地人民的拥戴。梁赞生有两个儿子，大儿子梁壁（谢霆锋 饰）天生聪颖，而幼子梁春则为人敦厚老实。梁壁一直想练武，偏偏梁赞不赞成他练武，多年来一直不肯把咏春传授给他。梁壁无奈只好自己习武，在外面结交了一帮酒肉朋友，为人好打不平。一次城里的恶少作恶时被梁壁狠狠教训了一顿，随后他找来了流浪高手到赞生堂踢馆，梁赞被逼迎战，虽然最后力挫强敌，但梁赞觉得梁壁整天就只会找麻烦，耍些三脚猫功夫，狠狠的罚了他一顿。梁壁从此更加不服气，发誓要在武学上超过父亲……。The poet Dante is lost in a dark and gloomy wood. At the summit of a mountain he sees the light of salvation. He endeavors to ascend to it, but his way is barred by three wild beasts, symbolizing Avarice, Pride and Lust.
