唐贞观年间，西凉叛乱，李世民御驾亲征，被敌帅苏宝同围困在锁阳城，主帅薛仁贵也被苏宝同的毒刀所害，命在旦夕。薛仁贵之子薛丁山获知父亲遇难，参加了二路平乱大军。一路上，薛丁山收服山贼窦一虎、大战苏宝同，最终将薛仁贵和李世民从锁阳城救出。李世民班师回朝，留下薛氏父子继续平乱。苏宝同搬来救兵并派出手下大将樊洪前去挑战。樊洪之女樊梨花对薛丁山一见钟情，不惜和家人反目，献关投薛。薛丁山却听信谄言，误以为樊梨花是杀父害兄的不义之人，将樊梨花赶出唐营。后来在程咬金等人的撮合帮助下，上演了“三休三请樊梨花”的动人故事。最终几经离合，薛丁山和樊梨花终于结为夫妻。在他们的共同努力下，唐军终于平定了西凉之乱。。Disarmingly realistic in its depiction of the realities of frontier life, Heartland is a strong antidote to the cliches of traditional Westerns. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。
